Hikes
I’m fortunate to live in Utah, an incredibly beautiful place. I spend a lot of time hiking and exploring. Each hike I try to find some challenging climbs, snap some great views, and find a cool rock.
4.18.2025: White Dome Nature Preserve
This is a unique place that is near our home. At one point it was in the middle of nowhere, but now it is surrounded by a school, airport, and warehouses. But the cool thing is when you get into the middle of the preserve you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. The highlight of the preserve is the Dwarf Bear Poppy. This is the only place on earth that it grows. I there a bit early for the poppies to be blooming but saw a few small ones.

12.21.2024: Upper and Lower Secret Sauce
Been awhile since I’ve been out on a hike, summer was busier than I wanted and kind of slipped away. So spur of the moment yesterday I loaded my dog into the truck and found a trail. We went to a local spot that is in between our house and the airport. it was a beautiful day and great weather but we only ran into one other person out there. It is a good and bad feeling to have places like this. In one way I love being so close to incredible outdoor experiences, but it is also sad to see humans taking over nature.

If you are a smart person you probably don’t go hiking in the desert when it is 110 degrees, but I have never claimed to be smart. I’ve been to this area a ton since it is nearby, but haven’t done this exact route. There wasn’t a lot to see, just lots of sun, sand, and rocks. But I still had a good time, even though I had to turn back early because I was running low on water.

4.27.2024: Ranger Bart Trail - Virgin River
Can’t believe it has been 4 months since I was out on a hike??? I really wasted the winter months. To be fair we did go on a few family hikes on some local trails but nothing new or too adventurous. This hike was supposed to be pretty relaxed but we wandered off the trail and ended up going through some rocky and exciting terrain. To be honest, I almost turned around when I got to the trailhead because there we dark clouds forming, but we decided to brave it. For the most part the weather cleared up but we did get rained on a bit. This hike is named after a local who did a lot for the area. There is a designated trail but there are tons of offshoots and we tried a bunch of them out.

12.31.2023: Aspiration Trail - American Flag Branch
Second hike of the week can’t complain about that, also a great way to close out the year. We have been to the Aspiration Trail before. It ia a local favorite, everyone who comes paints rocks and leaves them along the trail. Last time we went to the south peak which is home to huge piles and these rocks. This time we took the north fork which leads to an American Flag , as well as rocks. Even though it was the middle of winter we felt great in t-shirts as we hiked. I only took one picture this time since I was wranging the dog and daughter but I really love the one I did take.

12.28.2023: Zion National Park - The Watchmen
Spent some time between Christmas and New Year exploring our backyard. We snuck away from the kids for a few days to adventure in Zion National Park. It was busier than expected so we didn’t get to do as much as we wanted. But we did make it to the top of this outlook where you can see up and down the park. Even though it was December we hiked in tshirts since the weather was so nice. It was one of the best hikes I’ve done in a while. Crazy that we can drive for under an hour and be surrounded by things like this.

8.19.2023: Claim Jumper - East Approach
I have hiked this before and didn't really intend to hike it this day. But the trail is maybe half a mile from my house. So a random run through my neighborhood turned into me running this. It was a solid day for it, really sunny but not too hot. I saw a bunch of rabbits and snakes but didn’t get any pictures of those sadly. There was also a big lizard that thought the middle of the trail was the best place to hangout. It scared me on the way up and the way back down, it wanted to play chicken I guess and didn’t move until I almost stepped on it.

8.16.2023: Meditation Trail
This was another trail that I was able to walk to starting from my house. We are surrounded by nature on all sides which is incredible. I’ve done a few other hikes on this trail system before but hadn’t made it to this end. I picked a great day as well, it was over 100 degrees by the time I got home. Luckily, I packed a ton of water. This trail and a few of its sister trails are interesting. They are privately owned and the owners have done some interesting stuff with them. This one had a bench on a rock outcropping with a plaque dedicated to the previous owner of the land. And in another spot there was a memorial to those who had passed away. I saw a ton of lizards and chipmunks. I was hoping for some snakes but didn’t see any, they were probably hiding from the heat. It was probably too hot of a day for a hike like this but the views were well worth it.

7.15.2023: Kolob Canyon - Taylor Creek
We are in the middle of a heat wave down here, 114 today. I love the heat so it doesn’t bother me, but the family aren’t fans, so we had to escape to the mountains. We went to Kolob Canyon which is a lesser known part of Zion National Park. It’s different than what you picture as Zion but it is just as beautiful in it’s own way.

5.7.2023: Snow Canyon - Petrified Dunes
I think we will be spending a lot of time at Snow Canyon this summer, crazy that this is in our backyard. We took the kids out here today to go on a hike that ends in a tortoise statue. Turns out it wasn’t much of a hike, just a 10 minute walk down a gravel path. Since we were all geared up we decided to find somewhere else to explore and started hiking around these petrified dunes. And then we started climbing them. We got to the top to find some of the best views that I have seen in a long time. There is tons to explore on this trail that we didn’t get to see. And so much more, so we will be back.

4.14.2023: Mustang Pass and Ice Box
Two for one special today. I had planned to hike Mustang Pass today, specifically because it would get me close to the red cliff and snowy mountains, of which I have been trying to get some good pictures. But as I was on the Mustang trail I saw the start of the trail for Ice Box and it went up on top of some other really cool cliffs. So my solution was to take Mustang Trail and then on the way back make a detour to Ice Box. Both had incredible views. And I’d like to come back and explore each area more in depth, instead of trying to power through both.

3.9.2023: Half Dome (Again)
I’ve tried to get up here several times since we moved here 8 months ago. It is so appealing because it is right in my backyard. But for being so closed to home it is a severe climb. But it was a beautiful, clear day so I took a lunch break and rucked to the top. Couldn’t ask for better views than this, especially in my backyard. Besides the view, the highlight was a pair of hawks. They were perched on top when I started and I tried to grab some pictures. But as I got closer they took to the sky and circled me for awhile. After they decided to not hunt me, they flew off and left me to explore the plateau alone.

1.29.2023: Claim Jumper
The paradox of the desert seems to be that the deeper it gets into winter the nicer the hiking gets. I have seen a few signs around the area for this hike. “Claim Jumper” and “Secret Sauce” start from the same trail head. But before I knew they were hikes I had no idea where those signs were trying to take me. This is a fairly easy hike, it takes about 2 miles to slowly climb on top of the mesas. Once you are up there you have great views of the Desert Canyon area. You can also see the Dixie National Forest in the distance. The edge of the area runs right along the airport so you can also see small aircraft taking off and landing.

1.14.2023: Aspiration Trail
This was our first family hike of the year. Again so luckily to live in this place where we can be out hiking in the middle of winter. We picked this trail because it was new for us. And it is one of the more unique hikes here. It’s definitely a family friendly hike, maybe a mile long to the top without much elevation gain. The real attraction here is all along the trail there are painted rocks. Hikers bring them with sayings, designs, and pictures and leave them all along the paths. I say paths because there are several routes to the top. At the top are even more painted rocks and some great views.

1.5.2023: Half Dome
This is another one that is a gimme. I could start out from my house to get here. Also a huge benefit of where we live that I could hike this in January with nothing more than a hoodie. Depending where you are at on this thing you could be in Utah or Arizona. Hard to tell because it straddles the border and the BLM fence that lines the border disappears up here. Most of the time you are climbing on sandstone/limestone, so things breaking away are frequent. And the winter time means that everything is covered in moss. It was rainy and really windy today, which made things a bit sketchy. I got within maybe 12 feet of the top and turned back because I was worried about being blown off a cliff on the last scramble.

12.18.2022: Desert Canyon
This one is a bit of a freebie, since I was able to walk out my front door and onto the trail within 2 minutes. We live at the base of a mesa that straddles the border of Utah and Arizona. You can get on top of it and just walk through the desert for 100’s of miles before you met any people. It’s a fun place to poke around and explore because there are so many paths and formations to check out.
